Stories of our fellow eternal travelers.

    A Well With No Bottom

    Solomon and the two harlots.

Have you heard the story about the two harlots?  If you don’t know what the word, harlot, means, some synonyms for it are; prostitute, hooker, hustler, sex worker, streetwalker and more.  The term “harlot” is used in the Bible.  Our story comes from the Bible in 1 Kings 3:16-28.  Believe it or not, the story is about love.  Yes, prostitutes do love.  And no, I do not know this from personal experience.

As King Solomon sat on his throne, two women were brought before him.  They needed his help to solve a problem.  Both women were prostitutes, both women had newborn babies and both lived in the same house with their infants.

One night, one of the harlots accidentally laid on her infant and suffocated him.  Waking and seeing that she had killed her son, she quietly took her dead infant and put him in bed with the other woman, while taking the other woman’s live son for her own.

In the morning, the other woman awoke to find her son dead, but after examining him, she realized it was not her son.  It was evident that this child belonged to her roommate and that her own child had been taken by the other woman.

As they stood before the king, he considered their problem.  One child was alive and one child was dead.  The living child had been supposedly taken from his real mother by the mother who had the dead son.

    One Person’s Word Against Another

How would you solve this problem?  There were no finger print records to check.  You could not do a DNA test.  It was one person’s word against another.

King Solomon commanded that a sword be brought and the living child be divided in two and that one half should be given to each woman.  The woman whose son was the living child immediately begged the king that her child be given to the other woman and not be hurt.  The woman whose son had died said to divide him and that he would not be the son of either woman.

King Solomon rightly concluded that the woman who was willing to give up her living son so that he could live, was the mother.  He could tell that her self-sacrifice was born out of love for her child.  Therefore, he gave the living child back to his real mother.

    An Expression of Love

Have you felt love?  What does love look like to you?  In the story of the two harlots, love is exemplified by the sacrifice of the living child’s mother.  She was willing to give up her child forever so that he might live.

Love has the capacity to give to the point of self-sacrifice.  Each time you deny yourself to allow someone else to be first, you are practicing self-sacrifice.  The result is an expression of love.

    Two Moms

The sacrifice the harlot was willing to make before King Solomon is still happening today.  Standing before King Solomon, one mother loved her child so deeply that she was willing to let go of her baby forever so that her child could live and have a good life.  There are mothers today who face the same, heart-wrenching decision as that mother so long ago.

There is a woman who chose to give up her child for adoption.  She loved her daughter and cherished her.  She waited for her daughter to be released from the NICU so that they could go home together.  In her heart though, the pain of poverty and struggles she faced as a drug addict were not the gifts, she wanted to give her beautiful girl.

With an act of self-sacrifice that was reminiscent of that mother so long ago, this mother chose to give up her daughter in the hope that her child would live and have a better life.

What this mother could not know was that her choice would touch the life of another woman who had dreamed of a third child for twelve years.  This woman longed for more children but never considered adoption to fulfill that desire.

Unable to have another natural child of their own, this mother finally turned to adoption with her husband.  Her fear that she would not be able to love an adopted child as much as her own had prevented her from seriously considering adoption.

    Speaking God’s Language

What are the characteristics of love?  The Bible says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

The expression of love from the heart is pure, even if your life has been defiled with the refuse of the world.  The world cannot take away the gift of your love.  It cannot say your love is meaningless.  There is nothing in your life or the world around you that can hide or diminish your acts of love.

The Lord made the heart.  Each time you show an act of sincere love, you are speaking God’s language. He hears and sees a love that is pure and undefiled.  God is love and His love is found in us, in that one place in the heart that can’t be satisfied by the world.  It is the one place that only God and His love can satisfy because it is the source and fountain of life that God put there when He created us.  If you look close enough, it is where you will find Jesus Christ and His life.

    No Earthly Bottom

When the path of these two mothers crossed, the first found the hope she was looking for in her daughter’s safety and welfare.  The second mother found the hope she was looking for in the opportunity to love another child.  Both mothers saw the hope of a better path for this little life.  Is it any wonder this beautiful girl was named, Hope?

The second mother also found that she loved this child so deeply that she realized the well of her love was deep enough to drown in.  That’s because the well of love begins with Jesus Christ and there is no earthly bottom to it. Have you given up your child for adoption?  Is there a sacrifice you have made that cost you so dearly you felt as if your heart was torn from your very chest?  That same well of love is there for you.  God sees your sacrifice and He remembers the sacrifice His Son made 2000 years ago.  It is the sacrifice of denying yourself for the sake of someone else.  It is an expression of the deepest, most abiding love that is buried deep inside each of us.

    Vale Removed

We are a community of eternal beings, confined to an aging body and are called, “Mankind”.  We are on a journey called life and we are taking this journey together.

This life can be difficult.  Between the truly devastating events of our lives and the daily grind that wears us down little by little, we face an assault that can erode our faith, peace, love, kindness, understanding, patience and forgiveness.

    There is a Bigger Picture

    Hope

Everyone needs encouragement to remember there is a bigger picture.  If we step back and look at that bigger picture it will help put the world around us into perspective and allow our feet to stand on the solid ground of hope.

I don’t have all of the answers for why each person struggles and suffers and I am not a psychologist or a counselor, but I do have words of encouragement that will help you remember you were made for something greater.

I love stories.  The circumstances of our lives are the fuel for the stories of our lives.  More simply, what happens to you and how you respond is what paints the story of your life.  Many of those stories are of faith, healing, restoration, forgiveness and redemption and they are beautiful.  God loves to see those stories unfold as the years of our lives take us on this journey. Those stories also help your fellow eternal beings understand they are not alone in their trials, tribulations and joys.

    Little Nuances in Our Day

What really fascinates me are the micro stories.  These are little nuances in our day that can be seen from time to time if we are paying attention.  It takes practice to recognize them, then it takes believing to understand they are from God.  They are small testimonies that Jesus Christ loves you and is actively involved in your life.  Learning to understand what micro stories are and how to see them is one aspect of this blog.

    Pottery

I will share one of my own micro stories.  It has to do with the name of my blog “Vale Removed”.

Vale Removed may seem like an obscure name at first.  Why not use the word, Veil, as in a transparent covering used to put over one’s face?  That’s a good question and the root of my story.

When I first began writing, my goal was to start a podcast. My son, Andy, who has a successful podcast, gave me a lot of pointers.  He helped me understand things like conception, planning and execution.  Among those tips I was to make a list of names that would reflect the content of my podcast. Andy wanted me to find a name that I could use for all of my platforms in social media as well as my website. Having one name would make it easier for people to find me on each platform. Over time I decided that a blog better suited my path so I altered my work.

I made a list of over 20 possible names.  On 3-12-20, as I was about to start researching those names to see if they were available, I spoke with Andy and he encouraged me that if my name was taken, I could change the spelling of the name to fill my niche.  I said OK and made a mental note, just in case.

The next day was Friday the 13th.  I was supposed to be working early that morning, but because a fellow employee needed help, I switched with him and worked the late shift, which gave me the whole morning to research names.  My list of names was far too short I realized as I crossed each one off quickly.  In no time I had exhausted my list and wondered, what next?  I decided to go to my notes and look for inspiration there.

    A Life-Changing Year

The previous year had been a significant and life-changing year for me.  I made many entries into a journal of my thoughts and observations hoping I could understand where the Lord was directing my heart.  I trusted that in time, my notes would allow me to look back and find a common theme that could point the way forward confidently.

    Vintage Typewriter

I scrolled to the top of my entries and began reading through each one.  Most entries were brief and I moved through them easily.  I had hardly begun when I saw a line jump out at me.  It began, “The veil is being removed.”  I reflected on the passage and came up with Veil Removed.  It fit perfectly.  My hope for the blog was to encourage people to look past what they know about their daily lives and see something more.  I checked the name and was discouraged to find it was not available either!

I got angry for a moment.  Why was this so hard?  How could so many of my names be taken?  Then I remembered Andy’s advice to change the spelling.  I decided to change the word Veil, to Vale, even if the word meant nothing.  I checked the name and discovered it WAS available.  I thought, of course the name was available, it meant nothing so who would use it?  Then, I looked up the word, Vale, to see if it meant something just in case and was surprised to find that it did mean something.  It means; a valley, the world, or mortal or earthly life.

I couldn’t believe it.  I wanted to help people look past their earthly life and find an eternal perspective.  Vale Removed summed that up perfectly.  My path had led me to the right word.

    We Are Eternal Beings

I decided to read the whole entry.  At 2 paragraphs, it was one of the longest entries I had made.  The first paragraph turned out to be what has been on my heart for the past year.  There are 3 core points.

    Girl & Heaven
    1.  We are Eternal Beings made in the image of God.
    2. The Lord’s Harvest and gathering His children is what matters.
    3. You are God’s children.

The second paragraph reflected the deep conversation of my heart that had gripped me for over a year.  It said, “We will live forever, but we will be held accountable for neglecting others because we are clinging to the comfort and security of our own lives.”  This paragraph confirmed what God and my son had been encouraging me to do; get out of my comfort zone and get busy.

I had spent a lifetime building a career, taking care of my family and finding ways to make myself more comfortable.  It is our nature to want comfort but I for one can take it too far.  Those words along with Andy’s encouragement and God’s moving in my heart, were a dictate to me to start serving others.  I just didn’t know how I could help anyone.

I work in retail, so my schedule changes every week and too often, leaves me scrounging for time.  I was like a beggar, asking for moments here and there.  It was God, working through Andy, who gave me the key to move forward.

    Find That One Thing

    Question Mark

Andy had been encouraging me to find that one thing in life that was important to me and to change my habits just a little so that in time, I would accomplish something instead of nothing.  He said, even writing a few words a day would amount to a book over time.  He taught me to create a morning routine and showed me how that routine would make me successful in my endeavor.  He was right.  I found what I was looking for.

Both paragraphs summed up the reason I was on this course in my life, but it was the date of the entry that really spoke to me.  I wrote my original entry on 3-21-19.  I realized, if you switched the 21, it becomes 12 and it was on 3-12-20 that my son had encouraged me to switch the spelling of a name if that name was taken.  By taking my son’s advice on 3-12-20, switching the 12, I found what I was looking for on 3-21-19.

Some would call this a coincidence.  Others refuse to believe it means anything.  I believe it is God showing me that He cares about what I am doing.  God doesn’t always speak to us audibly.  But, like the beauty in the world around us, God has left testimonies, big and small, for us to see and remember that He has created everything and that He is with us every single day.  We are never alone or separated from Him, even on the worst days of our lives.

Through others and the circumstances of my own life, God has brought me here to share my heart with you.

I will leave you with this week’s encouragement.  Of all of the stars in the Universe that are beyond counting and all of the days of our existence to the beginning of time, there is no one like you.  You are unique, you are special and you are loved deeply by the God who created you.  It is not about what you do.  It is about who you are. There is a reason you are called a human being.

Vale Removed is a blog that looks beyond this life to the next.  Join me each week as we examine the world from an eternal perspective and find words of encouragement to remind us that we are meant for something more.

    Jesus Christ
He will walk you home if you give Him the chance.

  • Making Introductions: My New Blog

    Making Introductions: My New Blog

Here I go, ready or not.  Today is the launch of my website and blog, Vale Removed.  This is a project that has been on my heart intensely for the last 3 years.  I think it is only natural that my whole life has been building to this point.  Even though the many years of my life have been blind to this moment, those years of travel with my fellow eternal beings has molded and shaped me and ultimately this work.

    A Heart for the Underdog

Hello, my name is Jeff.  As a kid I was shy and earned the nickname, Lizard Skin.  Those years were not easy but as with anything, persevering through adversity refines and develops us.  As a result, I have a heart for the underdog.  In some way, those years helped me to become the encourager I am today.  In my heart I knew I thrived on encouraging others but it wasn’t until my dear friend, Dave, pointed it out that I realized just how important encouraging others is to me.

This effort is a walk of faith.  It was January, 2019, when God opened my eyes to the reality that each person walking, talking, playing and working are eternal beings.  Being a Christian, I understood that we are all eternal beings, but this time was different.  In that moment, I was seeing life with new eyes.  It was vibrant, powerful and beyond my ability to control.

    The Consequences of Hell Fire

Through the rest of 2019, there were other moments of extreme clarity as well as some of the most difficult days of my life.  They were mostly days of internal struggle but they taught me that Jesus Christ is in the midst of our life’s storm.

You may or may not know Jesus Christ or believe in Him.  It is not my purpose to be preachy or share the consequences of hell fire.  But in this work, I cannot deny Jesus Christ or His impact on my life.  If you share in this journey of mine, you will see and hear the life of Jesus Christ in me and in those I write about.

In my walk of faith with Jesus Christ, there have been highs and lows.  There are days I have been rewarded for my obedience and days I have suffered for my disobedience.  It is how we learn.

    Look Past the Mortality

Vale Removed, is about seeing life’s journey through the stories of our fellow human beings. As I have said before, each of us are eternal beings. It is how we have been created. Let us see if we can remove some of the valleys we walk through and look past the mortality of the life we cling to and discover the path of true life that lies beyond the veil of the world we see.

This work is not perfect.  In truth, it probably isn’t ready for me to present to the world.  But I am finding myself bound up in the details of getting it ready and am sensing fear at whether my effort will be worth it or if I am up to the task of meeting this work each week.  So, if you will allow me, I will revise and refine my work as we go.

Thank you for joining me.  May you find encouragement in the stories you read and hopefully find the light that endures to the life we don’t yet see.
